Compared to this point last year, enrollment in healthcare coverage through state insurance exchanges has fallen.
Around 15.6M Americans have enrolled in a plan for 2026 so far, CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz wrote in an X post. That compares to 16M at this time last year.
“Notably, this small drop follows several important CMS actions over the past year to combat fraudulent and improper enrollments, which have already removed more than enough people from premium subsidies who are covered elsewhere to account for the modest enrollment change,” Oz said.
He did not mention the expiring enhanced ACA subsidies that will be ending come Jan. 1, leading to significantly higher premium rates for those who get their health insurance on exchanges.
President Trump recently said he would like to hold a meeting with health insurance executives to discuss lowering costs for consumers.
