Lower-quality stocks have historically outperformed quality in a “dash to trash” in January, according to BofA.
Quality stocks have factors such as consistent earnings growth, strong cash flow, high profitability, stable demand, strong brands and good management.
“Since 1987, the lowest quality stocks (C&D by S&P Quality Ranks) have outperformed the highest quality stocks (A+ rated) nearly 80% of the time in January,” they said, adding that funds are entering into January with elevated levels of quality stocks.
BofA screened for low-quality stocks that are underweight by long-only funds and Buy-rated by BofA fundamental analysts.
