Rivian Automotive (RIVN) is recalling 19,641 previously serviced R1S and R1T electric vehicles in the U.S. due to incorrectly assembled rear toe links. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the electric vehicle maker will replace the rear toe-link bolts free of charge. Rivian (RIVN) was aware of only one single vehicle crash with minor injuries related to the toe link issue, according to NHTSA documents.
The recall action was made by the NHTSA because, in certain cases, if a toe link was serviced using the earlier service procedure, vehicle motion may eventually cause toe link joint separation. Separation of the toe link while the vehicle is being driven increases the risk of a crash without prior warning.
The recall population includes certain model year 2022 to 2025 R1T and R1S vehicles that may have received the service resulting in a joint that is not reassembled to design intent during a repair requiring separation and reassembly of a rear suspension toe link joint. The suspect period began on April 01, 2022, when Rivian (RIVN) service started to service vehicles requiring separation and reassembly of a rear suspension toe link joint using an older service procedure, and ended on March 10, 2025, when Rivian (RIVN) service started using an updated service procedure. That population was determined using service records. Similar vehicles not included in this recall have not had service requiring separation and reassembly of a rear suspension toe link joint or received this service after the updated procedure was implemented.
Shares of Rivian (RIVN) slipped 0.4% in premarket trading on Thursday.
