Tech Voices: DeSantis vs. AI, Tesla’s FSD, smart glasses market

Seeking Alpha’s roundup of statements, announcements, and remarks that could impact the technology sector.

  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for more regulation of AI and data centers, which he believes pose a credible threat to the U.S. economy.

“This technology threatens to upend key parts of our economy in ways that can leave many Americans out of work and with consumers footing the bill for the cost of power-intensive data centers,” DeSantis said during his state-of-the-state address, according to Bloomberg. “It presents real perils for children and parents.”

DeSantis has said he is particularly concerned about the strain data centers will put on the electrical grid.

  • Elon Musk said Tesla (TSLA) is converting its Full Self-Driving technology to a monthly subscription from a one-time fee product.

“Tesla will stop selling FSD after Feb. 14. FSD will only be available as a monthly subscription thereafter,” Musk announced on X on Wednesday.

Musk didn’t immediately offer a reason for the change.

  • The burgeoning smart glasses market is expected to expand to as much as $200B by 2040, according to HSBC.

Analysts for the bank based their estimate on early strong sales of smart glasses made by eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica (ESLOF) (ESLOY) and Meta (META). They added that the number of smart glasses users is expected to soar from 15M in 2025 to 289M by the end of 2039, with Apple (AAPL), Samsung (SSNLF), or Amazon (AMZN) likely to enter the market in the next couple of years, according to Bloomberg.

“The more competition, the more likely this market will gain critical mass and attract R&D efforts to the benefit of all players,” HSBC analysts said in their note, Bloomberg said.
