Intel (INTC) CEO Lip Bu-Tan said on Tuesday that his company will build graphics processing units in hopes of providing another competitor to industry giants Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD).
“I just hired the chief GPU architect, and he’s very good. I’m very delighted he joined me,” Tan said, according to Reuters, at the Cisco AI Summit.
The 66-year-old Tan added that the company’s efforts in GPUs will be led by Kevork Kechichian, Intel’s long-time head of data center processors. The GPU architect is Eric Demers, who joined Intel after a long stint at Qualcomm (QCOM). Demers publicly confirmed his move on LinkedIn last month.
Tan also weighed in on Intel’s foundry business and said “a couple of customers are engaging heavily,” adding that the interest is around Intel’s 14A manufacturing technology.
Intel shares rose 0.8% in late afternoon trading on Tuesday, but had been up as much as 4% earlier in the session.
