Meta Platforms (META) said Thursday it is filing lawsuits against several scam advertisers in Brazil, China, and Vietnam for engaging in deceptive and fraudulent practices.
In Brazil, the company filed multiple suits against advertisers who used celebrity images and voices and used deepfakes of popular doctors to promote and sell cosmetics and healthcare products. Among them were bad actors who also sold courses teaching these scam tactics.
In China, the company went after Shenzhen Yunzheng Technology Co., Ltd., which used “celeb-bait” ads to target people in the U.S., Japan, and other countries to join investment groups.
In Vietnam, the company took action against an individual named Lý Văn Lâm, who was engaged in “cloaking,” a method that fools review systems by hiding the real nature of a site linked to an ad, and in “subscription fraud,” the unauthorized charging of recurring fees on a credit card.
The fraudulent activities of the Vietnam-based individual supposedly involved Longchamp, a French leather goods company.
Last week, Meta worked with the UK and Nigerian authorities to bring down a scam network in Nigeria.
