Superintelligence push: Meta said to create applied AI engineering organization

Meta (META) is setting up a new applied AI engineering organization to bolster its superintelligence efforts, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing an internal memo.

The new organization will partner with Meta’s (META) Superintelligence Lab to build “the data engine that helps our models get better, faster,” according to the memo.

The organization will comprise two teams — one will be responsible for building interfaces and tooling, while the other will be responsible for executing tasks, generating data and providing evaluations that flow back to their modeling teams.

The teams will be led by Maher Saba, who is also the vice president of Meta’s (META) Reality Labs division. The organization will have an ultra-flat structure of up to 50 employees to one manager.

“Building great models isn’t just about researchers and compute; it requires real-world data, feedback and evals,” Saba wrote in the memo. “This creates the flywheel that turns a strong model into a leading one.”

Meta (META) has been working on new AI models, reportedly code-named Avocado and Mango. In its last earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would start shipping new models over the coming months.

“I expect our first models will be good, but more importantly, we’ll show the rapid trajectory that we’re on. And then I expect us to steadily push the frontier over the course of the year as we continue to release new models,” he added.
