Amazon latest tech giant to sign deals to invest in small nuclear reactors to power AI
Amazon (AMZN) said Wednesday it is investing in small nuclear reactors, coming just two days after a similar announcement by Google; advanced nuclear tech companies NuScale Power (NYSE:SMR) +8.3%, Oklo (NYSE:OKLO) +8.1% and Nano Nuclear Energy (NNE) +7.8% pre-market.
Amazon Web Services (AMZN) said it signed an agreement with Dominion Energy (D) to explore the development of a small module nuclear reactor near Dominion’s existing North Anna nuclear power station.
Amazon (AMZN) also will invest in reactor developer X-energy for its early development work, and collaborate with regional utility consortium Energy Northwest in Washington state to support construction of four X-energy reactors there.
Combined, the announcements could account for more than 5,000 MW of power by the late 2030s with the potential for more.
