Apple in ‘active testing,’ nearing production of low-cost MacBook: report

Apple (AAPL) is in “active testing” and is nearing early production of its oft-rumored low-cost MacBook, Bloomberg reported.

The new computer, which could be unveiled as soon as the first-half of 2026, is widely expected to be priced at a similar range to Chromebooks and entry-level Windows PCs. The target market for this are people who browse the web, work on documents or do light media editing, the news outlet added, citing people familiar with the matter. It could also target potential iPad buyers who want a more traditional laptop experience.

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.

The MacBook, which could be priced as low as $700, may use Apple’s processors that the tech giant already uses for the iPhones and sport a smaller LCD display than other Macs. Apple’s current smallest laptop is its 13.6-inch MacBook Air.

In June, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the tech giant is forecasting around 5M to 7M units for the more-affordable MacBook in 2026.

As of the end of the third-quarter, Apple held the fourth spot in the global P.C. market, behind Lenovo, HP, and Dell, according to IDC.

Apple shares rose 0.5% in midday trading on Tuesday.
