Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reportedly plans to open up its artificial intelligence models to third-party developers in a strategy to increase app production, according to Bloomberg.
The company is preparing a software development kit, which will allow developers the chance to build new apps using the large language models currently utilized for Apple Intelligence features, the report said. Apple apparently plans to reveal this new strategy at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9, according to people familiar with the matter.
Apple is looking to compete better in the field of generative AI. It released Apple Intelligence last year, promising features like smarter writing tools, summarization, and an upgraded Siri. While the announcements generated excitement, delays plagued the rollout. Unlike Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) or Meta (META), Apple enforces stringent limits on data access, constraining its ability to build competitive LLMs. Apple has also been late to secure GPUs, key hardware for training advanced models.
There are also reports that Apple might reveal the iPhone 17 Air, which will be the thinnest and lightest smartphone the company has ever produced, at the WWDC 2025.
Apple shares have declined 17% year to date. Shares were down 0.5% by noon trading on Tuesday.
