Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has won an appeal after The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit threw out a $300M verdict in a patent case against the iPhone maker.
“The problem with the district court’s single infringement question is that it deprived Apple of its right to a unanimous verdict on each legal claim against it,” the appeals court said in its verdict.
The appeals court — made up of a three-judge panel — said a new case should occur for both infringement and damages. It said U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap had improperly worded the verdict form when all the patent issues were combined into a single question.
Apple had previously been ordered to pay $300M after a jury found that it infringed upon wireless patents owned by intellectual property management company Optis Wireless Technology.
Optis Wireless Technology told Reuters that it is “highly confident” that the court will provide it with “fair compensation for the critical Optis patents that enable high-speed connectivity for millions of Apple devices.”
Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple is also appealing a separate ruling from a U.K. court that the iPhone maker owes Optis $502M for infringing on its U.K. wireless patents.
Apple shares fell 1.4% on Tuesday, along with a broader decline in the market.
