Some of Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) fastest wireless chargers face a ban in China, due to new radio frequency regulations from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, according to a report from the South China Morning Post.
Under the new rules, which go into effect on Sept. 1, only three frequency bands for mobile and portable wireless charging equipment will be allowed for sale in China. These include 100-148.5 kHz, 6765-6795 kHz and 13553-13567 kHz, the report said.
Apple’s 15W wireless charging feature operates at 360 kHz, which is outside the acceptable range. The new rules will prevent the local production, importation or sale of wireless chargers outside the allowed frequency ranges.
The purpose is to “avoid harmful interference of radio operations” and to “maintain the order of airwaves,” the report said. It is the latest regulation from the Chinese government aimed at foreign technology.
Not all Apple chargers will be affected by the new regulations. Apple’s 7.5W chargers operate at 127.7 kHz. These, however, have longer charging times than the 15W chargers.
Apple plans to unveil its next line of products, including the iPhone 16, at a live event on Sept. 9. Seeking Alpha reached out to Apple for comment.
