Apple working on redesigned Mac mini with M4 chip: report
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is working on completely redesigning its Mac mini computer and integrating the recently announced M4 chip as part of the change, Bloomberg reported.
The updated Mac mini, which is likely to be released later this year, will have the first major design change since it was changed in 2010 when Steve Jobs was still at the company, the news outlet added, citing people with knowledge of the matter. It will be smaller than the current version of the Mac mini and be similar in size to the Apple TV set-top box.
Apple last updated the Mac mini in January 2023 when it introduced a new version of it with the M2 line of chips, along with new versions of MacBook Pro.
In addition to a newly designed Mac mini, Apple is working on new versions of the iMac desktop and MacBook Pros that will come with the M4 chip. These computers could be released as soon as this year.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple is also working on new versions of the MacBook Air, Mac Pro and Mac Studio, all of which are likely to be released sometime in 2025.
Announced in May, the M4 comes with a powerful CPU with four performance cores and six efficiency cores and a new 10-core GPU, bringing ray tracing — widely used to enhance gaming — to the iPad for the first time. The M4 also has a 16-core neural engine, capable of 38T operations per second, Apple said at the time, touting its artificial intelligence capabilities.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
