Boeing (BA) and Ethiopian Airlines said Tuesday they have finalized an order for nine 787 Dreamliner aircraft, expanding the carrier’s long-haul fleet as it plans additional international growth.

The order, which was completed in December 2025, covers the 787-9 variant and follows Ethiopian Airlines’ earlier commitment for 11 737 Max jets announced at the Dubai Airshow. Together, the two transactions add 20 Boeing (BA) aircraft to the airline’s order book.
Ethiopian Airlines said the additional widebody jets will be used to support its long-haul network, which currently serves 145 international destinations. The airline operates 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft on intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to destinations in Europe, Asia and North America, as well as on selected intra-African routes.
“We are pleased to confirm the order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to further expand our existing fleet,” Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Mesfin Tasew said in a statement, adding that the airline continues to prioritize newer aircraft and updated technology as part of its fleet strategy.
The 787 Dreamliner is designed for long-range operations and can carry both passengers and cargo, allowing airlines to serve point-to-point routes while supporting freight demand. Boeing (BA) says the aircraft is more fuel-efficient than the models it replaces.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates the largest 787 fleet in Africa and also has outstanding orders for Boeing (BA) 737 Max, 777X and 787 aircraft. Boeing (BA) said the latest order reflects continued demand from airlines in the region for widebody aircraft capable of serving long-haul routes.
