EV maker BYD aims for 1.3M overseas car sales in 2026

BYD (BYDDF) (BYDDY) is targeting 1.3M vehicle sales in markets outside China this year, indicating over a 24% rise from last year, Li Yunfei, the Chinese EV giant’s general manager of branding and public relations, said during a media briefing in Shanghai on Saturday.

The Shenzhen-based carmaker overthrew Tesla (TSLA) to become the world’s No. 1 EV maker in 2025, delivering 1.05M vehicles in overseas markets, more than 150% growth compared to a year ago.

BYD, China’s most popular EV brand, sold a total of 4.6M vehicles last year, up 7.7% from 2024, in line with a slashed full-year sales target amid competition from domestic rivals such as Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. (GELYF) (GELHY) and Xiaomi Corp. (XIACF) (XIACY).

However, the latest forecast falls short of its prior expectations, as a Citi report based on communication with BYD management indicated in November that the company aims to sell 1.5M–1.6M vehicles in overseas markets this year.
