Catalyst Watch: AI spotlight at CES, Versant starts trading, and the December jobs report

Monday – January 5

  • Volatility watch – IREN Limited (IREN) and GameStop (GME) are set up for a volatile week of trading based on options volume. The most overbought stocks per their 14-day relative strength index include Amicus (FOLD), Dynavax (DVAX), and Sellas Life Sciences (SLS). The most oversold stocks per their 14-day Relative Strength Index include Tile Shop (TTSH), Lamb Weston (LW), and AMC Entertainment (AMC).
  • IPO watch – The analyst quiet period expires on Lumexa (LMRI), Wealthfront (WLTH), JM Group (JMG), and Cardinal Infrastructure (CDNL) to free up analysts to post ratings. The IPP lockup period expires for blocks of shares of Delixy (DLXY) and Masonglory (MSGY).
  • Spotlight on CES – The CES conference in Las Vegas during the week has a theme titled “Innovators Show Up.” The four main topics of focus are expected to be AI, robotics, digital health, and mobility. Notable companies to watch for product announcements, strategy reveals, or AI updates include Samsung (SSNLF), LG, Intel (INTC), Sony (SONY), Motorola (MSI), Nvidia (NVDA), AMD (AMD), Qualcomm (QCOM), Ambarella (AMBA), Himax (HIMX), Hyundai (HYMTF), and Meta Platforms (META).
  • All day – Versant (VSNT) will begin trading after spinning off from Comcast (CMCSA).
  • All day – Trio-Tech International (TRT) will begin trading on a split-adjusted basis following the company’s 2-for-1 stock split.
  • 4:00 p.m. Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang will deliver a CES keynote speech on AI and accelerated computing.
  • 9:30 p.m. AMD (AMD) CEO Lisa Su will give a CES keynote speech.
  • All day – Cybin (CYBN) will change its name to Helus Pharma and begin to trade on the Nasdaq.

Tuesday – January 6

  • All day – Costco Wholesale (COST) is expected to release its monthly sales report.
  • 8:00 a.m. Richmond Federal Reserve Bank President Tom Barkin will speak at the Raleigh Chamber Economic Forecast 2026.
  • 9:00 a.m. Seeking Alpha will hold its Top Stock 2026 event. Steven Cress will walk through how last year’s Top 10 Stocks performed and then unveil 10 fresh stock picks for 2026 using the Quant system’s most powerful signals.
  • 12:00 p.m. JPMorgan will hold a CES fireside chat with Marvell (MRVL) CEO Matt Murphy.
  • 5:00 p.m. Lenovo (LNVGY) CEO Yuanqing Yang will deliver a speech at CES.

Wednesday – January 7

  • Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Constellation Brands (STZ), Jefferies Financial (JEF), Albertsons Companies (ACI), and Cal-Maine Foods (CALM).
  • All day – The two-day Goldman Sachs Energy, CleanTech & Utilities Conference will begin. Notable companies participating include Phillips 66 (PSX), Plug Power (PLUG), and MasTec (MTZ).
  • All day – Caterpillar (CAT) will be in the spotlight at CES as the management team gives a presentation on industrial technology.
  • All day – The two-day Bank of America Defense Outlook and Commercial Aerospace Forum will be focused on defense, space, and commercial aerospace investor topics. Notable companies participating include Voyager Technologies (VOYG) and Vertical Aerospace Ltd. (EVTL).

Thursday – January 8

  • Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Tilray Brands (TLRY) and Acuity (AYI).
  • All day – The ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium will begin. Some of the notable companies with abstracts or drug data presentations include Astellas Pharma (ALPMF), Alpha Tau Medical (DRTS), Autonomix Medical (AMIX), RenovoRx (RNXT), and BullFrog AI (BFRG).
  • All day – Marks and Spencer (MAKSF) is scheduled to release its Christmas Trading Statement.

Friday – January 9

  • All day – The three-day Silicon Valley Auto Show will begin. Toyota (TM), Cadillac (GM), Lucid (LCID), and Volkswagen (VWAGY) are all expected to show off 2026 models. Tesla (TSLA) will also be making a rare auto show appearance with its Cybertruck.
  • 8:30 a.m. The December Jobs Report will be released. Economists forecast that nonfarm payrolls will rise by about 55,000 jobs for August, which is well below the six-month average. The unemployment rate is seen being reported at 4.5%.
  • 8:30 a.m. The Housing Starts report is scheduled to be released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
