Monday – October 7
- Volatility watch – Options trading volume is elevated on Vertex Energy (VTNR) and Tesla (TSLA). The most overbought stocks per their 14-day relative strength index include Fangdd (DUO), Capricor Therapeutics (CAPR), and SITE Centers (SITC). The most oversold stocks per their 14-day Relative Strength Index include Proficient Auto Logistics (PAL), EnVVeno Medical (NVNO), and Gold Reserve (OTCQX:GDRZF). Short interest is elevated again on Beyond Meat (BYND) and Cassava Sciences (SAVA) ahead of the earnings season.
- Fed speakers – Federal Reserve speakers will be out in full force during the week. Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Neel Kashkari will participate in a moderated question-and-answer session before the Bank Holding Company Association Fall Seminar, St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President Alberto Musalem will speak on the U.S. economy and monetary policy, New York Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams will give remarks and participate in a moderated discussion on the economic outlook and monetary policy, and Raphael Bostic will moderate the “Dynamic Business of Professional Sports” conversation before the Atlanta Fed’s Leading Voices Series.
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Duckhorn Portfolio (NAPA).
- All day – The three-day Nvidia (NVDA) AI Summit will begin in Washington, DC. The company plans to hold sessions covering the role of AI with cybersecurity, edge computing, industrial digitalization, healthcare, quantum computing, and telecommunications.
- All day – The four-day Battery Show and Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo in Detroit, Michigan will include participation from General Motors (GM), Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAF), and Glatfelter (GLT).
- All day – PagerDuty (PD) CEO Jennifer Tejada and Airbnb (ABNB) CFO Ellie Mertz will be two of the notable speakers at the two-day The Information WTF Summit.
Tuesday – October 8
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include PepsiCo (PEP) and Accolade (ACCD).
- All day – Notable investor events include Procter & Gamble’s (PG) annual meeting and Consolidated Edison’s (ED) business update call. There is also Smartsheet’s (SMAR) Engage Conference, which has been circled by analysts as potentially important.
- All day – It is the FDA action date on Zealand Pharma’s (OTCPK:ZLDPF) Dasiglucagon.
- All day – One of the biggest conferences of the year in the casino and gaming sector takes place during the week as the Global Gaming Expo runs at the Venetian on the Las Vegas Strip. Flutter Entertainment (FLUT) CEO Peter Jackson and MGM Resorts (MGM) CEO Bill Hornbuckle will be keynote speakers. Companies showing off products or software include Agilysys (AGYS), Everi Holdings (EVRI) and International Game Technology (IGT).
- 8:15 a.m. PepsiCo (PEP) will hold its earnings call. Management will likely add color about the recent acquisition of Siete Foods and other possible changes to the portfolio, including the large stake in Celsius Holdings (CELH). McCormick & Company (MKC) is the major PepsiCo (PEP) supplier that trades closest to it on earnings day.
- 12:45 p.m. General Motors (GM) will hold its Investor Day event.
Wednesday – October 9
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Azz (AZZ), Applied Digital (APLD), Helen of Troy (HELE).
- All day – It is the termination date of the merger between Albertsons Companies (ACI) and Kroger (KR) unless the companies file an extension.
- All day – Vista Outdoor (VSTO) will hold a special meeting to vote on the CSG transaction.
- All day – The Nasdaq will release its latest update on short interest positions.
- All day – Zoom Video (ZM) will hold its Zoomtopia Americas event. CEO Eric Yuan and Smita Hashim will give keynote talks.
- All day – Notable investor events include Myriad Genetics’ (MYGN) investor meeting, Alkermes’ (ALKS) event to review the company’s orexin portfolio and development strategy, and Globalstar (GSAT) tech talk event at MWC Las Vegas.
- 12:00 p.m. Illumina (ILMN) will hold an innovation technology event.
- 2:00 p.m. The Federal Reserve will release the minutes from the last meeting of the FOMC.
- Postmarket – Costco (COST) will release its September sales report.
Thursday – October 10
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Domino’s Pizza (DPZ).
- All day – Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) will hold its AI Day event. Management said the talks will focus on the company’s industry-leading technology and capabilities that are powering the company’s growth in AI.
- All day – Guidewire Software (GWRE) will hold its Analyst Day 2024 event.
- All day – Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will hold its Advancing AI 2024 event to showcase the next-generation AMD Instinct accelerators and 5th Gen AMD EPYC server processors. The company said it will also discuss networking and AI PC updates, in addition to highlighting its AI solutions ecosystem.
- All day – The IMF will issue its World Economic Outlook report.
- 7:30 a.m. The European Central Bank will release an update about the last policy meeting.
- 8:30 a.m. The September Consumer Price Index report will be released. Economists expect the core inflation rate to hold steady at +3.2% year-over-year, and +0.3% month-over-month.
- 12:45 p.m. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) will host its AI Day event.
- 10:00 p.m. Tesla (TSLA) will hold its highly anticipated robotaxi event. The update could impact other companies with big robotaxi or autonomous vehicle plans such as Waymo (GOOG), Uber Technologies (UBER), Aurora Innovation (AUR), Amazon’s (AMZN) Zoox, Baidu’s (BIDU) Apollo, and GM’ (GM) Cruise.
Friday – October 11
- Earnings watch – Notable companies due to report include JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Blackrock (BLK), BNY Mellon (BK), Fastenal (FAST).
- 8:30 a.m. The September Producer Price Index report will be released. Economists expect the PPI rate to fall to a +0.1% M/M pace from +0.2% in August.
- 10:00 a.m. The University of Michigan’s Consumer Survey report will be released.
