CDC vaccine advisory panel sets September meeting dates

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which makes determinations on the segments of the population that should receive vaccinations, will next meet on Sept. 18 and Sept. 19.

A Federal Register notice posted Thursday states the two-day meeting will cover Covid-19, hepatitis B, the measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (MMRV), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines.

The seven-member panel is composed of individuals that have been assigned only since June. That month, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired the prior members, replacing them with individuals personally vetted by himself.

The announcement also comes less than a day after the White House fired CDC Director Susan Monarez, saying she was not following the president’s or the Make America Health Again agendas. Also on Wednesday, the U.S. FDA authorized Covid-19 shots for the upcoming season, but with restrictions.

Recommending Covid shots for the groups the FDA identified is up to ACIP, and its decision will have ramifications for whether insurers cover the jabs.

ACIP is chaired by Martin Kulldorff, a biostatistician and former Harvard Medical School professor who spoke out against vaccinating children against the virus, mask mandates, and lockdowns during the pandemic.

CDC is allowing both written comments and oral comments to be made at the meeting from the public.
