China says open for dialogue in response to report of Nvidia AI chip ban: report

China’s foreign ministry said the country is willing to maintain dialogue with all parties involved to keep global industrial and supply chains stable, in response to reports of a Chinese regulator ordering companies to not buy Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) AI chips.

“We have always opposed discriminatory practices against specific countries on economic, trade, scientific and technological issues,” ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said in a regular press conference without elaborating, Reuters reported.

Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.

On Wednesday it was reported that the Cyberspace Administration of China, or CAC, banned the nation’s largest technology companies from buying Nvidia’s AI chips. Reportedly, China’s internet regulator told companies including ByteDance and Alibaba this week to end their testing and orders of the RTX Pro 6000D, Nvidia’s custom-made product for the country.

“We can only be in service of a market if a country wants us to be,” Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang said on Wednesday at a press conference in London in response to a question about the CAC. “I’m disappointed with what I see but they have larger agendas to work out between China and the United States. And I’m patient about it. We’ll continue to be supportive of the Chinese government and Chinese companies as they wish.”

Shares of Nvidia rose about 2% premarket on Thursday.
