Elon Musk denies report of xAI considering acquisition of Character.AI
- Elon Musk has denied a media report that his artificial intelligence startup xAI has considered acquiring chatbot maker Character.AI.
- “The [Mis]Information strikes again,” Musk wrote on X, in reference to the media outlet The Information. “xAI is not considering an acquisition of Character AI.”
- The Information reported late on Wednesday that xAI had considered acquiring Character.AI in an effort to find more ways to train its Grok AI models, citing a person who spoke with xAI leadership about the deal.
- Last month, it was reported that Character.AI held talks with Google (GOOG) (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META) and xAI about research partnerships.
- Character.AI, which was founded by former Google employees, has raised more than $150M in funding from venture capital firms, such as Andreessen Horowitz, to create AI chatbots that encompass anime characters, game character and more.
- Musk said last week that he will take the idea of Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) investing $5B into xAI to Tesla’s board of directors after an online poll showed respondents overwhelmingly in favor of such a tie-up.
