Elon Musk’s xAI releases first API
- Generative artificial intelligence startup xAI has released its first application programming interface, or API, Elon Musk said on Monday.
- Musk made the announcement on the X social network, which he is the majority owner of. Currently, the xAI API only has one model, known as “grok-beta.” This model is priced at $5M per million input tokens or $15M per million output tokens. It is unclear if the models are Grok-2 or Grok-2 mini, which were announced in August.
- Earlier this year, xAI raised $6B in new funding that valued the OpenAI competitor at $24B, with participation coming from a number of investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity Management & Research Company and others.

Musk said in July that he would bring the idea of Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) investing $5B into xAI to the electric vehicle maker’s board of directors after the idea received nearly two-thirds of “yes” votes in an online poll. He heads up xAI, along with X, Tesla and several other companies.
