Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) much-anticipated F1: The Movie raced to the top of the North American box office this weekend, delivering a $55.6 million opening, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore. The racing drama roared ahead of the competition, marking one of the strongest debuts for an original sports film in recent years.
Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) How to Train Your Dragon held the No. 2 spot with $19.4 million in its third weekend, pushing its domestic total past $200 million. Meanwhile, Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Elio took third place with $10.7 million, despite a steep 49% decline from its debut frame.
Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) M3GAN 2.0, the latest installment in the AI horror franchise, launched with $10.2 million, slightly trailing expectations. Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) 28 Years Later, the sequel to the apocalyptic hit, rounded out the top five with $9.7 million, down 68% in its second week.
Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Lilo & Stitch live-action remake added $6.9 million for a strong $400 million domestic haul after six weeks. Paramount’s (NASDAQ:PARA) Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning continues to show staying power with $4.15 million in its sixth week.
Among indie and specialty releases, A24’s Materialists brought in just under $3 million, Lionsgate’s (NYSE:LION) Ballerina earned $2.13 million, and Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) Karate Kid: Legends added $1 million despite a major theater count drop.
Overall, the top 10 films generated $122.8 million in domestic (United States and Canada) ticket sales.
