Ford (NYSE:F) has suspended sales of its Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle due to a battery issue that prevents doors from being unlocked.
The company has asked dealerships across the U.S. to halt demonstrations and deliveries until further notice.
The problem comes from an unexpected discharge of the battery, which can result in passengers being trapped inside the vehicle or locked out. Ford (NYSE:F) plans a software update to address the malfunction. The Mustang Mach-E does not have door handles and relies on the 12-volt battery to lock and unlock the doors.
Ford (NYSE:F) issued a warning to owners earlier that in the event of an unexpected 12V battery discharge, “the front door electronic latches retain their last lock/unlock status. If the driver or front passenger exits the front doors using the mechanical inside release handles, the doors may remain locked when they are closed.”
The problem impacts both sold and unsold vehicles.
