Ford (NYSE:F) to cut up to 1,000 jobs at its electric vehicle production plant in Cologne, Germany, due to weaker-than-expected demand for electric cars in Europe, according to a Reuters report.
The carmaker added that starting in January 2026, the Cologne facility will shift to a single-shift production schedule, which is expected to result in these job losses.
“In Europe, demand for electric cars remains well below industry forecasts,” the company said, according to the report.
“Ford will therefore switch production at the Cologne plant to single-shift operation from January 2026.”
The automaker invested billions to convert the Cologne plant into an EV production center, but continued weak demand has led to reduced output and labor needs. The step comes amid broader industry challenges such as low EV uptake, high upfront costs, and tariff woes.
