Gemini, ChatGPT, Grok continue to see monthly gains, BofA says

Google’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) Gemini, OpenAI’s (OPENAI) ChatGPT, and xAI’s (X.AI) Grok saw gains in users in December, Bank of America said on Wednesday.

Citing data from research firm SimilarWeb, Gemini daily active users rose 17% month-over-month and 351% year-over-year to 62M, while ChatGPT saw a 2% month-over-month and 262% year-over-year increase to roughly 392M. Gemini added 9M global daily active users, while ChatGPT and Grok added 6M and 1M, respectively. In addition, the data showed that Perplexity ended the period with 10M daily active users, up 341% year-over-year.

Bank of America analyst Justin Post also pointed out that Similarweb’s data showed that daily average web visits to Google continued to rise in December, up 1% year-over-year to 2.7B. Post has a Buy rating and $335 price target on Alphabet.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT saw a 49% year-over-year increase in daily average web visits to 178M, while Microsoft’s (MSFT) Bing fell 9% to 110M, and Gemini saw a 567% increase to 56M. Visits to Google, ChatGPT, and Bing fell 1%, 9% and 2.1% on a month-over-month basis, while Gemini rose 24%.

Delving deeper, average daily traffic in the U.S. to Google was flat year-over-year, while Gemini and ChatGPT saw year-over-year increases of 403% and 86%, respectively. Conversely, Bing saw a 0.5% decline.

“[The] data suggests Gemini 3.0 LLM traction continues to drive traffic & Gemini app downloads,” Post wrote in a note to clients. “In contrast, [the] data suggests ChatGPT’s global traffic growth is slowing (web traffic largely flat in 2H’25), potentially as AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini gain traction. With a growing percentage of Google searches served in AI-native formats, we think Street could be underestimating potential Search upside in 2026 as higher engagement and improved conversions drive incremental monetization.”
