General Motors (GM) is investing $30M to train its Fairfax, Kansas workforce to begin production of new vehicles and raise its efforts to increase auto manufacturing in the U.S.
The Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City currently makes the Chevy Bolt and will soon transition to production of a gas-powered Chevy Equinox and next-generation Buick compact SUV.
This $30M is on top of a $5.5B investment in its U.S. manufacturing footprint to ensure GM employees “stay at the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing and continue driving American excellence,” GM said in a statement.
The Fairfax facility is currently undergoing a $390M retooling to shift production from the Cadillac XT4 and Chevy Malibu to the Equinox and Buick SUV, as well as 2028 production start date for the Buick Envision.
The Fairfax employees will be trained in more advanced roles as technology evolves and to facilitate cross-training between ICE and EV production.
