GM is being probed by the NHTSA for a recall remedy that may not have worked

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a review of General Motors (GM) vehicles equipped with L87 6.2L V8 engines that were supposed to be fixed under a prior recall action.

The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation received 36 owner responses alleging engine failure in vehicles subject to a previous recall action. The original recall involved 597,630 vehicles from the 2021-2024 model years. The recall was due to connecting rod or crankshaft components that may have manufacturing defects that led to engine damage or failure in some cases. As part of the remedy, dealers were supposed to inspect the engine and make repairs or replacements if needed. After passing inspection, vehicles were switched to a higher viscosity oil.

“Recall 25V-274 addresses vehicles equipped with an L87 6.2L V8 gas engine that experienced engine damage or failure. Recall 25V-274’s remedy includes an engine inspection. Based on the results of the inspection, the vehicle will receive an oil change to a higher viscosity oil or an engine replacement. The complaints received allege failures of both remedies.”

Shares of General Motors (GM) were down 1.0% in premarket trading.
