Alphabet’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) Google said it is opening a new Taipei office, which will be its largest AI infrastructure hardware engineering hub outside the U.S.
Google noted that the multidisciplinary hub, which will be home to hundreds of employees, is designed to accelerate AI innovation.
The company added that this builds on Google’s existing presence in Taiwan, and connects the critical elements for building AI infrastructure, from design and engineering to manufacturing and deployment.
“The technology developed and tested in this Taipei hub will be deployed in Google’s data centers and AI infrastructure around the world. It forms the backbone of the services that billions of people rely on every day, from Search and YouTube to the latest innovations powered by Gemini,” said Google in a blog post on Thursday.
The facility work will focus on integrating chips – including Google’s TPU AI processors – onto motherboards and attaching them to servers, said Greg Moore, Google Cloud’s director of platforms development, Reuters reported.
The U.S. tech giant noted that its first data center in Asia Pacific was in Taiwan, and it has invested in multiple international subsea cables, which are joint projects with other technology companies, connecting Taiwan to the world.
Taiwan is home to world’s largest contract chipmaker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) whose chips are widely used by companies like Nvidia (NVDA) that is driving the global AI boom.
