Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) is rolling out Nano Banana 2, an updated version of the artificial intelligence-powered image generation tool it first launched in August 2025.
Nano Banana 2 is powered by the Gemini 3.1 Flash Image model. It brings some higher-quality features, which appear in Nano Banana Pro, to a larger audience of users.
Some of the enhanced creative controls in Nano Banana 2 include better subject consistency, allowing users to carry up to five characters and 14 objects across a workflow; more precise following of instructions; production-ready specs supporting up to 4K resolutions; and a visual fidelity upgrade with improved lighting, textures, and details.
It is available today in the Gemini app, and it replaces Nano Banana Pro in the Fast, Thinking, and Pro models. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers will maintain access to Nano Banana Pro. It is also available in Google Search in AI Mode and Lens in mobile and desktop browsers. It now features eight new languages and can be used in more than 140 new countries and territories. Furthermore, it can be accessed in Google Cloud with the Gemini API in Vertex AI, Flow, and Google Ads.
AI-powered image generation tools have faced some backlash. Earlier this year, xAI’s (X.AI) chatbot Grok fell under scrutiny after some people were using it to edit images of real people into racy attire.
There have also been concerns about people creating deepfakes with AI image generators.
Google has worked to address this issue with improved marking and verification of images to help users identify AI-generated content.
