The November launch of Gemini 3 caused renewed enthusiasm for Google (GOOG) (GOOGL), both among investors, organizations, and the broader tech community. And even though OpenAI’s (OPENAI) ChatGPT is still more widely used than Gemini, investment firm BNP Paribas believes the gap is closing fast.
“In December, Gemini’s share of website visits and app avg. monthly [daily active users] increased to 22.5% and 13.2%, respectively, from 17.7% and 11.7% in November and 6.5% and 11.2% in December of 2024,” BNP Paribas analyst Nick Jones wrote in a note to clients, citing the firm’s AI tracker, which aggregates third-party data trends.
Google said in November that Gemini had more than 650M monthly active users, while OpenAI has more than 800M weekly active users.
Adding that the launch of Gemini 3 in November appears to have been a “key catalyst” for user adoption, Jones said he is “encouraged” by Google’s acceleration. He also noted that the tech giant is positioned to be the “dominant AI platform,” which has implications for OpenAI and Meta (META), especially given that Meta AI has seen “minimal adoption.”
Jones also pointed out that the introduction of Gemini 3 Flash, which was launched globally last month, in Search’s AI mode is a positive for the tech giant. “This supports our thesis around GOOGL having multiple ways to monetize AI,” he explained.
