At its “Made by Google” event on Wednesday, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) showed off its latest Tensor G5 TPU, with a stark change from years past: its maker.
The search giant said the latest chip in its tensor processing unit series will be made by Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE:TSM), whereas the previous versions were made by Samsung (OTCPK:SSNLF).
The Tensor G5 will use Taiwan Semi’s latest 3 nanometer manufacturing process and is roughly 34% faster than the previous Tensor chip, Google said. The tech giant, which unveiled a myriad of devices at the event, including the Pixel 10 smartphone line, Pixel Watch 4 and more, also said the Tensor G5 is 60% more powerful when it comes to running artificial intelligence and Gemini-related tasks.
The news of the Tensor G5 being produced by Taiwan Semiconductor was first reported by Bloomberg.
Shares of Google and Taiwan Semiconductor were lower on Wednesday amid a sell-off in technology stocks.
