Gulf of Mexico drillers gradually resume activities in wake of hurricane

About a fifth of crude oil output and 28% of natural gas production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico waters were still offline in the wake of Hurricane Francine, according to a federal report on Sunday.
The storm barreled through the offshore-energy region and reached Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane on Wednesday.
As of Sunday, Energy producers had shut-in 338,690 barrels a day of oil production and nearly 515 million cubic feet of natural gas from Gulf waters, the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement estimated from producer reports.
Producers such as Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM), Chevron (NYSE:CVX), Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) and Shell (NYSE:SHEL) announced plans to evacuate staff and limit drilling in preparation for the storm.
