Trump administration health officials intend to make a presentation at a crucial meeting of a panel of CDC vaccine advisors next week in which they will link the deaths of 25 children to COVID-19 vaccines.
The claim is said to be based on information in the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), according to a report in The Washington Post, citing four sources.
A report made to the VAERS system does not necessarily mean that a side effect or death experienced by an individual was caused by a drug or vaccine. The reports are subsequently investigated.
The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is scheduled to meet on Sept. 18 and 19 to discuss recommendations for many shots, including COVID. While the U.S. FDA authorized COVID vaccines for the fall in August, who it is authorized for is restricted compared to prior years.
ACIP’s decision on whether to recommend COVID shots for the groups that the FDA authorized it for is crucial as it determines whether payors are required to cover them.
