Intel, AMD tie up to form x86 ecosystem advisory group

Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) announced on Tuesday that the two have team up to form what they are calling an x86 ecosystem advisory group.

The two semiconductor giants, who are the primary users of the x86 architecture, said the group will help developers focus on new ways to expand the x86 ecosystem, and make it easier for software to be created.

Many other semiconductor designers use chip architecture from Arm Holdings (ARM). AMD also uses Arm’s architecture for many of its processors.

Intel Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger and AMD Chief Executive Officer Dr. Lisa Su praised the tie-up, with Gelsinger saying, “we are on the cusp of one of the most significant shifts in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades – with new levels of customization, compatibility and scalability needed to meet current and future customer needs.”

“We are excited to bring the industry together to provide direction on future architectural enhancements and extend the incredible success of x86 for decades to come,” Dr. Su added.

Founding members of the advisory group include Broadcom (AVGO), Dell (DELL), Google (GOOG) (GOOGL) Cloud, HP Enterprise (HPE), HP (HPQ), Lenovo, Microsoft (MSFT), Oracle (ORCL) and Red Hat, a division of IBM (IBM).

Intel and AMD shares were lower in Tuesday trading, amid a sell-off in the sector caused by weak guidance from ASML (ASML).
