The Luxembourg-based General Court of the EU has lowered the penalty on Intel (INTC) in the EU antitrust case to €237M.
The judgement from the court said that €237M – a reduction of about €140M from the 2023 fine of €376M – was “more appropriate reflection of the gravity and duration of the infringement at issue.”
Europe’s second-highest court dismissed chipmaker’s challenge to the fine, maintaining that the company had “abused its dominant position by seeking to exclude its competitor AMD (AMD) from the x86 microprocessor.”
The original fine issued was a record €1.06B in 2009, but it was subsequently annulled, and the European Commission imposed a new fine in 2023. The General Court of the EU upheld the 2023 decision in essence.
