‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ roars to $91.5M domestic debut, global total tops $318M

Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) latest installment in the blockbuster dinosaur franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth, stomped to the top of the box office this weekend, opening with an estimated $91.5 million across 4,308 North American theaters, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore. The film, directed by Gareth Edwards and featuring Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, is already off to a strong global start, grossing $318.3 million worldwide.

The film marks a new chapter for the $6 billion franchise, set five years after Jurassic World Dominion, as humanity races to secure DNA from the planet’s most colossal creatures. It scored a robust per-theater average of $21,240, with $147.3 million already banked domestically through Sunday.

‘F1 The Movie’ holds strong in second place

Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD) and Apple Original Films’ (NASDAQ:AAPL) F1 The Movie, starring Brad Pitt, earned $26.1 million in its second weekend, down 54% but bringing its domestic haul to $109.5 million. The racing drama continues to perform well globally, adding $82.4 million for a worldwide total of $293.6 million. The film is also a standout in IMAX (NYSE:IMAX), generating $24.3 million globally this weekend, with IMAX screens accounting for 29% of its domestic box office.

Top five round out with familiar hits

Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) How to Train Your Dragon live-action reboot took third place with $11 million, pushing its domestic cume to $224 million after four weeks. Pixar’s (NYSE:DIS) Elio added $5.7 million, landing in fourth with a North American total of $55.1 million. Rounding out the top five is Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) 28 Years Later, the latest in the 28 Days Later horror saga, grossing $4.6 million and reaching $60.2 million domestically.

‘Spinal Tap’ anniversary and specialty releases

Fathom Events’ This Is Spinal Tap 41st Anniversary re-release rocked its way to a Top 10 finish with $931,737, proving the cult classic still has loyal fans. A24’s critically acclaimed Sorry, Baby expanded slightly to 14 locations, grossing $1.14 million with a per-screen average of $9,708. Meanwhile, indie crime comedy Kill The Jockey debuted in one theater, taking in $4,600.

Looking ahead

Next weekend, Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD) rolls out James Gunn’s Superman, expected to be another major IMAX draw as the DC Universe gets its highly anticipated reboot.

Total weekend box office for the Top 10 films reached $151.47 million, according to Comscore.
