A California federal court jury on Friday awarded Masimo (MASI) $634M in damages after finding that Apple (AAPL) infringed one of its patents.
The patent in question, No. 10,433,776, deals with technology measuring pulse oximetry (blood oxygen levels), a feature on Apple Watches. Apple had argued to its own engineers developed health monitoring elements in the watches.
“This is a significant win in our ongoing efforts to protect our innovations and intellectual property, which is crucial to our ability to develop technology that benefits patients,” Masimo said in a statement.
An Apple spokesperson toldReutersthe company plans to appeal.
In August, Masimo sued the U.S. Customs and Border Protection over its decision to allow Apple to import Apple Watches with the blood-oxygen monitoring feature during the patent trial.
