Meta Platforms (META) could unveil a new image and video-focused artificial intelligence model code-named “Mango” alongside another model, known internally as “Avocado,” The Wall Street Journal reported.
Meta’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, discussed the models in an internal company meeting on Thursday, the news outlet added, citing people who heard the remarks. Both models are expected to be released in the first half of next year.
Wang also noted that the upcoming Avocado model, which may be a successor to Meta’s Llama family of models, is better at coding. He also said the company is looking into creating so-called world models. Meta’s chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, is leaving the tech giant to form his own AI startup to work on world models.
Wang joined Meta this summer after the tech giant paid nearly $15B to acquire a stake in Scale AI.
In June, it was reported that Meta executives, including Zuckerberg, had discussed “de-investing” in its Llama family of language models in favor of models made by competitors, including those made by OpenAI (OPENAI) and Anthropic (ANTHRO).
A couple of months later, Meta restructured its artificial intelligence division, in part to better organize the company so it can develop A.I. products more quickly to compete with others.
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
