Meta (META) is planning to launch a smartwatch this year, according to a report by The Information late on Wednesday, citing sources.
The new watch, code-named “Malibu 2,” will have health-tracking features and a built-in Meta AI assistant, the report said.
Meta’s watch is expected to compete directly with the Apple Watch (AAPL). It is also rumored the iPhone maker is working on a pair of smart glasses to bite into Meta’s market share.
Meta had plans for a smartwatch about five years ago but then scrapped the project as part of cost cuts in its Reality Labs division.
The new smartwatch would arrive ahead of its mixed reality glasses, which Meta has delayed until 2027.
The company has about four augmented reality and mixed-reality glasses in development, according to the report.
Meta reconsidered launch timelines for these glasses to avoid confusion among customers and prevent back-to-back releases of the products.
