Meta teams up with Sage Geosystems to use geothermal energy to power US data centers
Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) is collaborating with Sage Geosystems to receive geothermal energy to support its data centers in the U.S.
The social media giant said on Monday that Sage’s proprietary Geopressured Geothermal System, or GGS, will be used to provide carbon-free power for its data centers.
The first phase of this project is expected to be online and operating in 2027.
Under the partnership, the companies plan to deliver up to 150 MW of new geothermal baseload power to support its data center growth, Meta said in a press release on Monday.
Meta added that hot dry rock is an abundant resource compared to traditional hydrothermal formations, making Sage’s GGS technology a highly scalable approach with the potential for rapid expansion in the U.S. and globally.
Meta noted that to date, it has contracted over 12,000 MW in renewable energy projects.
