Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) is slashing jobs at its superintelligence unit by roughly 600 positions, according to a report by Axios on Wednesday, citing an internal memo.
The report said Meta expects the reorganization to create “a more agile operation” after its AI efforts became “overly bureaucratic.”
“By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact,” Meta’s newly hired AI chief Alexandr Wang reportedly said in the memo.
The cuts will occur in the company’s Fundamental AI Research lab (FAIR) and in its product-related AI and AI infrastructure units but will spare the TBD Lab unit, the report said. Employees in the U.S. will be notified by 7:00 am Pacific Time (10:00 am ET) Wednesday whether their jobs are affected.
According to the memo, the company is inviting affected employees to apply for other roles within Meta and expects most will find another position internally.
“This is a talented group of individuals, and we need their skills in other parts of the company,” Wang reportedly said.
