Ofcom, the communication services regulator in the UK, launched a probe into Meta Platforms Inc. (META) to ascertain whether the social media and tech giant complied with the watchdog’s requirements in its responses to information requests issued in 2024 and 2025 about its enterprise messaging platform, WhatsApp for Business.
“Last year, we carried out a review of the wholesale market for business bulk SMS messages, which are often used for things like appointment reminders and parcel delivery notifications,” Ofcom said in a statement on Friday.
The regulator had sent notices seeking certain information about WhatsApp because the platform qualified as an alternative business messaging services provider.
“The available evidence suggests that Meta may not have complied with certain requirements imposed under section 135 in that some of the information provided by Meta in response to the Notices may not have been complete and accurate,” they added.
