Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has revised the release of some of its upcoming in-house artificial intelligence chips, according to The Information.
The software giant now intends to release its most powerful in-house chips in 2028 or beyond as it focuses on chips it can better develop in the interim, the report said. Microsoft is pursuing in-house development to reduce its reliance on Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA). Microsoft also recently pushed back the release of Maia 200 out to 2026 from 2025. Maia 100 was released last year.
More powerful Microsoft chips, code-named Braga, Braga-R and Clea, are based on new designs and are taking longer than expected to complete. Braga was just completed last month, which was six months behind schedule, according to the report. Braga-R is expected to enter mass production in 2028. Clea, Microsoft’s third-generation AI chip, has been pushed out beyond 2028.
The delays affect Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL), as Microsoft is relying on the semiconductor firm to design some of the components for its AI chips. Marvell shares slipped 1% during afternoon trading on Wednesday.
Amazon Web Services (AMZN) also partners with Marvell in the development of its in-house Trainium chips.
