Most shorted S&P 500 stocks in May

Albemarle (ALB), American Airlines Group (AAL) and Charter Communications (CHTR) lead the list of most shorted S&P 500 stocks as a percentage of float in May.

As of May 31, 13.62% of Albemarle’s (ALB) shares were sold short, compared to 12.24% at the end of April. The specialty chemicals maker saw an increase in short interest during the month, with traders selling 15.94M shares of ALB short, an increase of 17.3% from the previous total of 13.59M (at mid-May).

Short interest in American Airlines (AAL) increased by 56.42% at May-end compared to mid-May, indicating that investor sentiment is decreasing significantly. The U.S. carrier retained its place as the most shorted stock among the S&P 500 industrial sector, at 12.71% compared to 8.03% last month.
