The Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Google-backed (NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL) artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has appointed tech industry veteran Reed Hastings to its board of directors.
Hastings is the co-founder and chairman of the streaming giant Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX). He has also served on the boards of Meta Platforms (META), Microsoft (MSFT) and Bloomberg.
“The Long Term Benefit Trust appointed Reed because his impressive leadership experience, deep philanthropic work, and commitment to addressing AI’s societal challenges make him uniquely qualified to guide Anthropic at this critical juncture in AI development,” said Buddy Shah, Chair of Anthropic’s Long Term Benefit Trust.
Hastings is well known for his philanthropic activity. He recently donated $50M to Bowdoin College to establish research into AI and humanity.
“Anthropic is very optimistic about the AI benefits for humanity, but is also very aware of the economic, social, and safety challenges,” Hastings said. “I’m joining Anthropic’s board because I believe in their approach to AI development, and to help humanity progress.”
“His focus on the human impact of technology—whether at Netflix or through his global health and education initiatives—makes him an ideal addition to our board as we continue building AI that helps rather than harms,” said Anthropic President Daniela Amodei.
Anthropic’s Claude large language models continue to expand. Last week, Anthropic unveiled its next generation of Claude models called Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4 for coding, advanced reasoning, and AI agents. Anthropic is valued at $61.5B.
