Netflix ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ leads weekend box office, dethroning ‘Weapons’

Kpop Demon Hunters, an animated musicial from Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), took the top domestic box office this weekend, bringing in at least $18M.

That was enough to unseat Weapons, from Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD), which slipped to second place after taking the top spot in its first two weekends of release. Weapons earned around $15.6M in North America.

Although Netflix is not reporting box office grosses for Kpop Demon Hunters, Variety estimated it earned $18M-$20M.

The success of Kpop Demon Hunters, presented in theaters as a sing-along version for one weekend only, is unusual considering that the movie was released on the streaming service’s platform on June 20.

However, since then, it has become Netflix’s second most streamed movie of all time. Adding to the musical’s appeal is that three of its original songs are trending in the Billboard music charts.

Rounding out the top 3 was Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Freakier Friday, bringing in $9.2M in its third weekend out.
