Nvidia, SK hynix co-developing AI-focused solid state drive: report

  • Nvidia (NVDA) and South Korea’s SK hynix (HXSC.F) are working on co-developing an artificial intelligence-focused solid state drive, using NAND chips, WCCTech reported.
  • The two companies are working on a new SSD solution, code-named “Storage Next,” the news outlet reported. The project could lead to an AI solid state drive that has 100M input/output operations per second, or IOPS, which is significantly larger than present-day SSDs. Given the massive computing needs for AI workloads, it could eventually act as a sort of memory layer for AI workloads, going beyond what high bandwidth-memory or dynamic random access memory offer.
  • Nvidia and SK hynix did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
  • Nvidia shares were fractionally lower in late morning trading on Tuesday.
