In the wake of launching ChatGPT Health, OpenAI (OPENAI) announced today it has acquired Torch, a healthcare startup that unifies lab results, medications and visit recordings.
OpenAI purchased the healthcare app for about $100M, according to The Information. Torch was founded last year and is comprised of four employees, all of whom plan to work for OpenAI.
Last week, OpenAI, which is heavily backed by Microsoft (MSFT) and SoftBank (SFTBY)(SFTBF), introduced ChatGPT Health, which it says is aimed at making users “feel more informed, prepared, and confident” about their health.
“We started Torch to build a medical memory for AI, unifying scattered records into a context engine that helps you see the full picture, connect the dots, and make sure nothing important gets lost in the noise again,” Torch said. “Now, we’re joining OpenAI to realize that vision at a bigger scale than we could have ever achieved on our own.”
“Bringing this together with ChatGPT Health opens up a new way to understand and manage your health,” OpenAI said in a post on X.
ChatGPT Health allows users to use the app in a more secure and private way, offering “purpose-built encryption and isolation to keep health conversations protected and compartmentalized,” the company said.
Big tech companies have invested heavily in health and medicine over the last several years, including Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Meta Platforms (META), Samsung (SSNLF) and Microsoft.
