OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed during a New York Times podcast that he recently spoke with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella to discuss the future of their working partnership. He added that he had a “super nice call” with Nadella.
Altman mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) investment terms, including the size of its future equity stake in OpenAI.
“Obviously in any deep partnership, there are points of tension and we certainly have those,” Altman told NYT. “But on the whole, it’s been like really wonderfully good for both companies.”
OpenAI’s biggest backer—Microsoft (MSFT)—has pumped billions of dollars into the ChatGPT maker, but reports of a rift between the two have surfaced. Last week, the Financial Times reported that the Windows maker could walk away from its relationship with OpenAI as it looks to become a for-profit entity.
He also confirmed having productive talks with President Trump about AI and credited him with understanding the geopolitical and economic importance of the technology.
“I think he really gets it,” Altman said during Hard Fork—the tech podcast from NYT. He added, “I think he really understands the importance of leadership in this technology.”
When asked if he thought Mark Zuckerberg really believed Meta (META) would build “superintelligence” or if it was just a recruiting tactic, he replied, “I think he believes he’s super intelligent.”
