Google’s (GOOG)(GOOGL) Gemini artificial intelligence chatbot app continues to gain ground on OpenAI’s (OPENAI) ChatGPT, according to The Information, citing data from Sensor Tower.
Gemini accounted for 33% of downloads during the week of November 24. This was up from 29% during the prior two weeks, the report said. ChatGPT held on to the top spot during the week of November 24 with 42%, but was down from the 46% and 45% share during the two weeks prior. The Sensor Tower data does not include downloads to users in China.
The data also showed that ChatGPT still receives much more daily usage on mobile apps than its competitors. For example, nearly 90% of mobile app user sessions with chatbots included ChatGPT. Gemini accounted for 4% of the sessions, followed by DeepSeek (DEEPSEEK) and Perplexity.
Google rolled out Gemini 3 on November 18. It was also reported that Google could be bringing ads to Gemini.
OpenAI released ChatGPT-5.1 on November 12.
Last week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declared a “code red” effort to improve ChatGPT’s quality amid intensifying competition in the AI race.
